The Mother Road

The weather has been just terrible. New York summers are generally characterized by warm, sunny days with a nice breeze to compliment. This summer's weather, however, resembles a monsoon more than anything else. While looking through some photos on LIFE.com, I came across this one of U.S. Route 66, a 2,448 mile highway that existed until June 1985 before it was replaced by the Interstate Highway System. While I cannot tell what the weather was like in this photograph because it is in black and white, it were the clouds that caught my eye and brought to mind the inclement weather New York has been experiencing.
